The Lock family – Coley

Hi, what a great website. I thought you might be interested to receive details of my family, who lived in Wolseley Street, same time as you by the sounds of it.

My dad, Edward Lock (known as little Ted or Teddy), was born in Dec 1941 and lived at 93 Wolseley Street from birth until he married my mum in 1972. My grandparents Edward (Ted) Snr and Doris Lock lived at 93 until their deaths in 1976 & 79 respectively. My dad was the middle of 3 children (Barry, (died 1986) oldest and Carol (died 1999) youngest). The three children all went to Coley Primary School and then onto Katesgrove School. My granddad worked at Gascoigne’s and my nan at the Jam factory although I don’t know the dates they were there.

In my dads late teens and twenties he worked at Castle Street garage. The bottom floor being directly at the end of Wolseley Street. Additionally, he has mentioned a few pubs he used to drink in. Rose and Crown, Barley Mow, Blue Lion. I also recognise some of the names on here from friends he has spoken of

I don’t suppose you have any photos/merchandise to sell as I know that my dad would love to have a piece of his past!

Incidentally, my first flat purchase was 1 Cranford Mews, which is at the Berkeley Avenue end of Wolseley Street. Dad loved to come round to my place and reminisce. I’ve since married and moved to Tilehurst.

I would love to hear from you or indeed anyone else with any questions/comments. I’m a real historian on my dads side so coming across your site has filled me with absolute glee

All the best.

Hi John – really love your website, blog.  My grandfather was Maurice Chard, grandmother was Hilda Chard, they lived at 25 Garnet Street.  My father is Brian Chard, sadly my dad passed away in 1992.  My dad’s brother David and Gordon are still alive.  My dad’s sister Doreen Chard passed away a year ago.  Really great to hear about your memories from old Reading.

I have made contact with John Mayo who used to live next door to me at 104 Wolseley Street and I had a very interesting telephone conversation with him.  And to my utter surprise, he told me that his mother Florrie is still living at 104 Wolseley Street and is 102 years old!  What a wonderful achievement.  And she is in good health for her age.

Hi John – this map of old Southcote may be of interest.  This was before The Happy Prospect pub was built and before the flats on Bath Road.  It includes Bucknells Farm and Southcote Manor.

Hi Rachel – it certainly is a small world.  When I first started this web site, someone told me – I think it was Audrey Hora (nee Millam) that Florrie Mayo was approaching 100 years old and still living at 104 Wolseley Street.  I just did a search on www.192.com and she is still listed there along with a couple of J Mayos in Reading.  There is a fair chance one of the J Mayos is Florrie’s son John.

Looking forward to hearing more from you and adding more detail to the web site!!  I can imagine the day when one or more of my grandchildren or great grandchildren will one day travel to the other side of the globe and stroll along Wolseley and surrounding streets thinking that this is where I came from!!

Hi John. It’s a small world sometimes. My maternal Grandad is Patrick Davis- usually known as Paddy. He’s listed on your website as one of the pupils of St James’ School. He is still well and living in Reading! I will be getting in touch with David, and getting some of Dad’s memories to you. Last night he was telling me he was best man to John Mayo at his wedding, but they have lost touch.

Hi Rachel – it was lovely to hear from you.  I have often wondered if Dave was still alive!  I remember your grandparents although not terribly well.  Gordon rings a bell in my mind as does Doreen.  But Dave was my age – I will be 75 next March.

I am so pleased that my web site gave you and your father some pleasure – one of the reasons I keep it going.  Any memories etc that Gordon or Dave can provide would be very welcome.

Hi. My Dad lived at 25 Garnet Street. His parents were Maurice and Hilda Chard. My Dad is Gordon and he has sisters Joyce and Doreen, and brothers David and Brian. Sadly only my Dad and David are still with us. Looking at your webpage today- on Dad’s 79th birthday- has been a great trip down memory lane.

Hi Sophie

Apologies for the late reply.

I’m glad my little bit of Southcote memories appealed to you. I really don’t have much more to offer as I only lived in Southcote Lane for about 5 years and it was a long time ago!! As I mention on my home page, the main reason for the web site is to record as much as I can about where I lived as a young lad for my children and their children. Any memories or anecdotes you might have regarding where you lived would be welcome as it is so close to Southcote.

Regards
JC

Hello John, I wonder if my friend Terry Green can be added to your mailing list. Terry is ex-Reading School , 1950-55 and knows a number of the people who pop up in your Posts. I’ve known him since 1963 when we all went on holiday to Italy together sponsored by the then Reading Central Club.

Ken Rose was on that trip. Recently there have been references to Dave Downs who Terry knows well. I’ve also met Dave several times when I go to the Madejski & previously at Elm Park.

Hi David

Nice to hear from you – I remember your earlier posts enquiring about Ken and also wondering who the milkman was in the main picture. Sorry to hear about Ken – I must have met him when we were kids but don’t remember – Geoff Weller obviously thought he was a great guy.

Cheers

June Greswell – Coley

Good Morning John

It is always good to get your latest posts.  I wonder if you could post on your site for me – very sadly, my husband, Ken Greswell, passed away on 29 November 2014 here in France.  He had fought a very brave battle with cancer.  Please keep me on your mailing list, as I enjoy reading your posts.

With all good wishes for a healthy happy 2015

Kind regards
June Greswell

Re Geoff’s post below – the name Downs or Downes rings a bell but I can’t place it in Southcote at the moment.  There was a David Downs in the same year as me at Reading School – he lived in Tilehurst and still does.  He is the historian for the Reading FC.

If anyone has any idea if Ann married and what her married name is and where she might be living in Australia, then I might be able to search for her.

Geoff Weller – Coley-Southcote

Hello John
Hope you are keeping well.
Seeing the last post about Southcote jogged a memory.  Can anyone remember the Downes family in Southcote Circuit Lane area?  I used to go to Coley School with Ann Downs in about 1952/53 .  I seem to remember she came from a large family.  I lost contact when I went to senior school, and I believe she emigrated to Australia later on.  Also I spent a lot of time around Bucknell’s Farm as my Grandfather John /Jack Weller was a ploughman on the Bucknell’s Farm and lived at North Lodge in Coley Park.  North Lodge was near the Goods RAILWAY near the “Wooden Bridge”, in the North West corner of Coley Park.
regards
Geoff Weller

Sophie Saraby – Southcote

Hi John, I was googling Southcote and found your post on the above. I lived at Calcot Place, down the next driveway on the left after Joel’s newsagent, on the Bath Rd going away from Reading. I spent my life until the age of 14 (1972) playing on the Bucknall’s farm which was next door to us, and consider it my “special world” so it was very special indeed to hear from someone who knew that little corner so well! I used to catch the bus home from the Abbey school each day and get off at the stop just past Joel’s then walk through what we called the waste ground to our house which was next door to Nita Bucknall’s.

Such a very beautiful area of flat fields and willows, all so changed now. Would love to hear any other memories you have of the area. Best wishes, Sophie Saraby

The Army photo was taken in approx 1956. I have attached another photo which shows your house, taken in August 1958.

Re the doctors – “The surgery was built in 1955 when Dr John Dilley was appointed to the new practice. Dr Gordon Taylor took over in 1956 and it remained a single-handed practice until 1959 when Dr Michael Davies joined.” (Info taken from the surgery website.)

You mentioned the parade of shops near Kennilworth Avenue. They’re called Southcote Parade but were known to us as The Top Shops. Mr. and Mrs. Thurgar left 239 Southcote Lane and moved to live in Southcote Parade in their later years, not sure where John went.

Loved the photo! I am going to create a new page under the “My Southcote” tab on the Home page and call it “Memories and Trivia” and will put your photo there.  Very pleased to hear of your connection to Tom Bucknall – he was a great guy – died far too young. And also fascinated that your husband Martin is both an old boy of Reading School and a school governor.  Yes – the Old Boys know me well!!  A few years ago, following a series of emails with three other old boys from my year, I developed a web site – www.class-of-1952.com – tracking what happened to the 90 or so boys who started out at Reading School in September 1952. I had wanted the web site to be public hoping to attract interest from other guys in our year who might stumble across it but several guys argued that if it was public, then they wanted out so I had no choice but to set it up as a login site only and to ask Google to ignore it. But as I have developed and maintained the site with no help from anyone else, I have always reserved the right to give access to others I feel might find the site interesting.  The web site is well received by the guys from our year and a number of them now meet every year at the Caversham Golf Club. There is a lot of information on the web site and I sometimes think that other old boys from other years could do something similar. If Martin is interested in having a look at what I have done, I am happy to give him a temporary login and password for him to have a look at it.

If you go to my “My Reading” web site and go to the “Posts” page, you will see posts from a number of ex Coley people – in fact my Coley email list has about 30 people in it and many of them are people who have stumbled across the site – and they have provided a lot of interesting information. I would be more than happy to take any information from you – stories, photos, anecdotes etc and put them up on my “My Southcote” page and you never know who might stumble across it and provide further information.
