Filipe Morgado – Coley

Hello Mr. Cummings.
My name is Filipe Morgado (pronounced Philip) and myself along with my family of Portuguese immigrants, we are the current inhabitants of no. 100 Wolseley Street. accidently found your page and it was with great curiosity that I read about your time at Wolseley Street and all its history from the 40s and 50s. I was inspired by your webpage detailing your earlier life and hope to convince my parents and grandparents to do the same. There seemed to be such a strong feeling of community back in those days, and it makes me feel a bit sad that nowadays I don’t know any of my neighbours and can’t even say hello to any of them without them looking at me all funny. There isn’t much I can tell you about the current state of Wolseley Street, apart that there doesn’t seem to be many British left here at all! Our house is all Portuguese, next door at 98 there is a massive Indian family (I swear there are at least 3 or 4 generations of them under the same roof), opposite the street there are at least 3 different houses with Polish people, and one African family at another house, so all and all I think most British decided to go to Australia and left the UK for us foreigners.

I hope you will continue to chronicle your life stories and inspire more people to do the same, and if there is anything you’d like me to find out about the surrounding area, then I’ll be happy to try and find it out for you, and even upload a picture or two of places for you.

Sincerely
Filipe Morgado
P.S.- Curiously, you mentioned that no. 100 had the Roses living here, and my wife’s maiden name is Rosa, which is Portuguese for Rose, so in a sense the Roses still live in this house.
